Annual Miss Universe Costume Horror
They've unveiled the Australian native costume for the Miss Universe pageant and, as usual, it's a horror: looks like a cross between Crocodile Dundee and a bad Pocahontas Halloween costume.

Australian Brownlow Medal Red Carpet
I love the Australian Football League Brownlow Award red carpet: even TV hostess Rachael Finch this year ran close to a skank look with a plunging neckline and a really high slit. The rest of the looksCollapse )

Undies Through the Ages
Just got back from a museum exhibit in the charming gold rush town of Bendigo: Undressed: 350 Years of Fashion in Underwear, done in coordination with the V&A in London. (The small Bendigo Art Gallery has cleverly established a relationship with the V&A and we've done the 90-minute train ride for other fashion exhibits of theirs such as one on Grace Kelly and another on wedding dresses.) This one was, as usual, very well curated with lots of explanatory material, although two of the pieces were unfortunately not shown for best ease of viewing. Among other pieces, it had the earliest bra in any museum collection anywhere, knickers worn by Queen Victoria, and a rare example of men's underwear from the 1800s with a built-in padded seat for comfort in riding a horse!

My two favorite facts: (1) Colored ladies undies were considered "morally suspect" until a columnist for The Ladies Realm magazine in 1902 urged women to start wearing them to keep their husbands from committing adultery, and (2) the waistlines shown in fashion plates of the 18th and 19th centuries were often exaggerated and surviving undergarments indicate that women actually had wider waistlines than are shown. (I always wondered how the women in the fashion plates could even breathe, although even the more "natural" waistlines are still incredibly tiny.) They also noted that fancy ladies knickers became popular with the advent of cage crinolines because gusts of wind easily blew the construction up and revealed the wearer's legs.

Hope They Do Better on the Field
Scotland's parade uniforms for the upcoming Commonwealth Games that they're hosting are causing a lot of upset, with a petition on change.org to replace them and lots of mockery on Twitter, and for good reason IMHO.
