Smofbabe's Life and Times - Football Good; Baseball Bad
Football Good; Baseball Bad|
Mixed sports day: the SF Giants lost their first playoff game at home to Cincinnati.
On the college football front, though, things were great: #10 Florida beat #4 LSU, not allowing their opponents a TD for the second game in a row and holding LSU to only 9 first downs. Also good news was that rival FSU, #3 in the country coming in to their game against NC State, lost 17-16 after leading 16-0 at halftime! NC State's final drive started with only 2:27 left and no timeouts, and they converted three fourth downs. Given that #5 Georgia also lost, looks like UF will be movin' on up in the rankings. Go Gators!
Congratulations to randy_byers on Oregon's decisive win against Washington. (Still the ugliest uniforms in college football, though :-> )
I was just in Baltimore this week for the Grace Hopper conference, and the hotel restaurant was LOUD during the Orioles playoff game Friday night. After so many years in Pittsburgh, it's very strange to experience a happy baseball playoff crowd. Or any baseball playoff crowd, come to think of it.
It is a weird feeling once your team gets going - the Gators were mediocre to poor all through my college years and a bit after so it was quite an adjustment when they became a powerhouse: a *good* one, mind you. Meanwhile, after going through a couple of just-misses with the SF Giants, they managed to win a World Series after I left. Not holding out much hope this year, though, as they're behind in the NL playoff series 0-2, both home games.
Is Urban Meyer starting to fade in memory yet?
Well, maybe the Duckies and the Gators will get a chance to compare and contrast uniforms in bowl season.
I think it would be pretty cool to have another Bay Bridge World Series, so the Giants & As better get in gear!
Regarding Urban, despite the wins, I suspect that most of the die-hard Gator fans would rather see us as an exciting air attack team than the current smash-mouth philosophy but we'll see. They still miss Spurrier!
As for the Bay Bridge World Series, doesn't look very likely. I remember my shock as an East Coast person when I had just moved to the Bay Area and both teams were in the WS: people had caps that displayed both the As and Giants logos and were saying things in TV interviews like "As long as it's a Bay Area team..." Can't imagine that ever happening in New York or Chicago!!!
